Everything we've tried here from the cauliflower soup to the apple dessert has been delicious! I leave with my belly full and a to-go box in my hand as the portions are quite large. The staff is friendly and quick with refills on drinks and such. It is a bit dreary inside due to the paneling, but the decor otherwise is ok. My only complaint is that the hours/days open are limited.

I lived in Germany for close to a decade - Uwe's is the real deal. SO tasty and large portions. My only complaint is the high cost of everything, when I go back it will be for lunch.

First, excuse any typos or spelling mistakes...I'm trying to fight through an awesome food coma induced by lots of great food! Uwe's is damn good. I saw this place when I had lunch at Nemo's and thought I'd give it a try. Don't let the bland, non-descript strip mall stop you, it's worth checking out. The service was great. My waitress was very friendly and prompt...she made my lunch experience more pleasant. I had the cup of soup (goulash?)...more of a beef stew. Good, hearty but not out of the ordinary. I also got the lunch Jaeger Snitzle. Now that's what I'm talking about!!! It was so damn good that I stuffed myself. The brown mushroom gravy was nicely peppery, the red cabbage and it's sweet vinegary taste beautifully contrasted the heartiness of the Snitzle. The crust of the Snitzle was golden brown, and tender inside. Sorry, I think I squeaked a tear looking at my empty plate while reliving the beautiful memories eating the Snitzle. The portion was large...almost too large. Seriously, there is no reason a person should eat this much. But who am I to cast stones...I inhaled every bite and licked the plate clean. Now I gotta double up on the crossfit sessions. I've included a picture...testify! (the lunch menu was very reasonaly priced, for $7.95 you get snitzle, veggies or red cabbage, fried potato or spatzle and slices of bread and butter)

Always, always go here for lunch never dinner. Lunch is very reasonable so no wonder lunchtime is always popular here! $6-10 for the best German food in town. The place remains the top favorite restaurant for my mom and I since we first started going over 7 years ago! Had almost everything on the menu and haven't had anything I didn't like. I usually get the jäger schnitzel, chicken cordon bleu, frikadelle, or the sauerbraten. Even the liver and onions is oddly delicious! The food is more of a homemade authentic style, which I enjoy. I'm almost surprised when I go to other German restaurants as they tend to be all about huge portions drenched in over-the-top decadent 5,000 calorie sauces. And cost twice as much. The service is outstanding and even when busy the attentiveness remains top notch. Very friendly to regulars and non-regulars alike. I wish more German restaurants were like this with good, reasonably priced food.

I make a trip here once a year, and after 12hrs on the road, this is our first stop. The food is flavorful and always hot, the staff is always happy to see you and the atmosphere is warm and cozy- perfect for the family or a date night. By far one of the best German Hauses in the Nation.

This is probably the worst example of German food I have ever had. I read all the reviews and had a bar tender tell me that this was the best place ever. Well let me just say I will NEVER go back to Uwes! Our food looked and tasted like frozen or out if a jar. Edelweiss is the way to go for German cuisine. I lived in Germany for 3 years and this is NOT German food

Overall a good experience. Wanted to try one of a few German places in C. Springs for dinner. The Potato Soup and bread was excellent, the jäger schnitzel was good but not what I'm accustom too. I think if they used fresh vegetables vs frozen it would add to the meal 10 fold. Very cozy inside and not at all loud. I'll go back again and give something else a try in the menu.
(3)Bob G.
The service was great. The atmosphere was good. I had the Jaeger Schnitzel. It was OK. The German potato salad was a little off. The red cabbage was excellent. All in all, an OK dinner experience.
(3)Charles C.
Coworker took me here for the first time, and it was great. When you walk in it makes you feel like you are eating at the owner's home and not a restaurant . Portions are more than filling and service was great. Jager schnitzel wasn't the best I ever had, but was above average and more than I expected for a German restaurant in America. Only issue you should know is that you might need reservations, we didn't but my coworker was shocked by how few people were in that day (and it was still decently busy).

Can't believe it has taken me this long to finally visit Uwe's. For German fare, Edelweiss has been my go-to for years. Uwe's is just as good at Edelweiss, at about two-thirds the price. The service here is excellent, and I could tell that this place is patronized by many regulars, as many were greeted by name as they entered the dining room. The salads to me were the highlight of the meal, though my weinerschnitzel was prepared perfectly - crispy on the outside, yet moist and tender inside - not overcooked. The dining room is a bit plain and ordinary (sort of like a German version of Roman Villa), so it lacks the charm of Edelweiss. However, for a good, hearty weeknight meal that won't break the bank, this is a great place. (Note: dining hours weeknights are very limited, just 530-800)
(4)Kevin S.
Great place authentic and huge portions. Also great service. I would recommend ordering the half unless you like left overs. Please don't let the location or outside appearance sway you great place to have lunch or dinner!
(5)Amy S.
Salad was awesome. Service speedy. Accordian player great. Loved loved loved my special veal entree.

I respect everyone's opinion that Edelweiß or Schnitzel Fritz is better german food than Uwe's, but I wonder what is wrong with you all. As a german who immigrated to the US as an adult I learned to cook from my german mother and grandmother. While I know that regional cuisine is just as diverse in Germany as it is in the US (you gon't go to TX to eat Maine Lobster) I can guarantee you that Uwe's has german down pat. I have eaten at Edelweiß and I will not set foot in that place again. The only thing german there is the ambiance. Same with Schnitzel Fritz. I may head out there to get cakes, but for food I will only to to Uwe's. For those who don't really like true german food, don't blame the restaurant. Uwe's is the only true German Restaurant I have found!!

Best German in town. Ambience: Nice, quiet and homey. Not what it appears from the outside being set in a somewhat cheap looking strip mall. Service: Good. Meals come quickly and the waitress was happy to accommodate some modification in my meal according to the sides I wanted. Food: Very good. I had the pork Weiner Schnitzel and it was thick, moist and cooked perfectly. The red cabbage was tangy and there was plenty of bread that came along with our meal. I had the soup which came with the main and it turned out to be a cream of cucumber or something like that. I wouldn't have ordered this had I known but it turned out to be a real marvel - I'd order it again in a heartbeat. Portion sizes were good too - no one went away hungry and many took some home. Price: I found it worth it for the quality of fare. I'll be going back.

Had dinner there tonight to celebrate my wife's birthday. We've been eating at Uwe's for over 25 years, and it is still one of our favorite restaurants. I had Sauerbraten, and my wife had the special (veal). Frequently, we get the Jagerschnitzel (our favorite) but we opted for a change. I've had the Sauerbraten before, and it came with red cabbage and spaetzle. (I requested spaetzle instead of the potato dumplings just to try it again.) Both of our dinners were excellent, but I prefer Uwe's fried potatoes over the spaetzle. As usual, the portions were huge, and we took a box home. Because we were full, we didn't have room for their wonderful apple strudel which we usually get, too. Being a Saturday night, they also had a fine musician playing the accordion. Love this place!

This is a place for good food, and the only thing holding it back is lack of atmosphere (which is why it didn't get a 5 from me). If you want atmosphere, go to Edelweiss. If you want good food come here. My favorites are the Schnitzels. My wife loves the Bratwursts. I am not a fan of sauerbraten, so I can't say how that is. If you are going on Friday or Saturday I recommend reservations, as it is frequently busy. Ieat here regularly and have not been disappointed yet.

Tucked away in a non-decript strip mall on the older side of town, Uwe's is a tasty reprieve for any value seeking foodie looking to scratch that Bavarian itch. The Germanic staff give a friendly "guten tag" before showing you to your basically adored table. The bare-bones menu features hungarian goulash or bavarian salad, as well as schnitzel (also offering the jaeger varient), pork chops, saurbraten and several german beers on tap. On our recent lunch visit, our .5L Vorstieners were hoppy and refreshing. The meal starts with several slices of homemade bread with german butter. My friend ordered the schnitzel (which, apparently can be ordered in a half size) with steamed veggies and fried potatoes. He always gets the schitzel and enjoyed the breaded, sauteed veal cutlet. I ordered the saurbraten, mainly for the potato dumplings that were served on the side. The saurbraten itself was sliced from a round roast and lacked moistness, but was OK in the flavor department. The potato dumplings were delicious--2.5 inch balls of starchy goodness. the dumplings were not rubbery and were well complimented by the saurbraten gravy. The red cabbage pulled the entire dish together. One big advantage that Uwe's has over the other german restaurants in town (none of them are really great, IMO, but Edelweiss does have variety on its side) is the prices. Each of our lunches were less than $8 and the beers were $3.5 or something like that. At Edelweiss, you definately pay for the atmosphere. The service was freindly and all in german (since my friend is fluent). I have yet to try Schnitzelfritz, which is more like a German cafe, so I can't speak to that, but should I be craving a no-frills Bavarian lunch, Uwe's will be my next stop.

Uwe's was pretty tasty in some areas and not as tasty in others. I really loved the bread that came with our meals - it tasted a lot like sourdough rye, which I have not had since moving from Oregon. Yum! I also really loved the salad starter - it was perfectly pickled goodness! All the treats you'd expect from a german salad - a tart salad mix, some pickled cucumbers and beans and some potatoes. I could order a couple dishes of this alone and leave quite happy! The entrees were a little less impressive. I had a traditional Jaeger Schnitzel and my husband had a sausage dish. He thought his sausages were pretty good, but I'm not a big sausage fan myself. I thought my scnitzel was a little bland, as well as the vegetables and potatoes that came with dinner. I'm thinking I may have just ordered wrong though, so overall, Uwe's is worth a meal!

Love it. One of my favorites. Love the salad beforehand and the Jaegerschnitzel.

I found this place thanks to Yelp while in COS. It's fast, friendly, delicious and won't break the bank. It fills up fast so make a reservation!

First, let me say that I hate to give a local, independent restaurant a bad review. In a city where Applebee's is seen as fine dining, I appreciate what it takes to make it in the business. The first thing a restaurant needs is good food. The opener, a tomato soup, was not bad, but could have beena Knorr mix. I ordered a favorite, smoked pork chops in a mushroom sauce with sauerkraut and potatoes. The pork was three, very thinly sliced pieces of what looked to be ham. It had a smoky flavor, but it wasn't like any smoked pork chop I've ever had. The sauce was non-descript with what appeared to be canned mushrooms. The sauerkraut was okay, but it may have come out a can. The best part of the dinner was the pan-fired potatoes. My wife had a salad that was not bad. She ordered veal cordon-bleu that came in a 1/4 inch thick casing of what looked like whole wheat pancake batter. The mixed vegetables were not fresh, and were probably frozen. I noticed the butter came from Sysco, and I'm sure most, if not all, of what we had did, too. I love hole-in-the-wall places with good food. The lack of any sense of decorating style, cheap silverware, and cheap paper place mats at Uwe's just confirmed that we were in a place that we'll never visit again.

I had a friend bring me to Uwe's on a business trip and it was great. The food reminded me of my trip to Germany and I will make sure to visit Uwe's again next trip.

We have been there once, usually going to Edelweiss for our German cravings. Price is a little cheaper, but food was just alright for us. Location a bit out of the way. No compelling reason for us to return.

My husband and I ate here last week. He is from Germany, and I have spent time there so we both have experience with what authentic German food should be. The food here was tasty. I give big props for hand-made Spaetzle and Dumplings. My husband had the Jaeger Schnitzel which he thought tasted really good, but his fried potatoes were dry. I had the Zuericher Geschneltzes (the special for the day) and I thought all of it was amazing. The salads that came with it were authentic and tasty. Very large portions of everything. Somewhat lacking in atmosphere, and the menu selection was somewhat limited. All in all it was really good, just not great. The problem with looking for really tasty ethnic food is that no one can ever make it just like grandma can. That being said, my husband and i will definitely be back to eat here.

My bosses took me here for lunch last Friday. If you're driving by you'll never think twice about coming to this place to eat. You're missing out. The service was friendly, fast, and good. Normally, the dishes are about $9; but you can place a 'half order' or anything you want for half the price and you're still getting large portions. I've seen the regular portions they serve, it barely fits on the plate! Overall, it's a truly great place to have lunch in. Word of advice...NEVER EVER show up without reservations, they are so busy there you'll end up waiting while you're watching others enjoy their meal.

The people who have rated this place under 5 stars clearly don't know what they are talking about. The owners are from Germany and the restaurant has blackout months due to them living between the two countries. Everything from the decor, service, ambiance and of course the food are 100% authentic German. Hands down the best German food I have had in America. Every time I am in town I make it a point to eat here. I highly encourage people to check it out!!
(5)Babaji R.
The food here is consistently delicious. I love the goulash and the jaegerschnitzl. This is our family standby lunch spot!
(5)Inayah V.
Uwe's makes you work for it! But like all good things, it's well worth it! What they lack in operating hours (they take at a few months off every year) dining room space and ambiance, and convenient location they more than make up for with truly authentic German flavor! I adore the spaetzle, sauerkraut, jager schnitzel and rice pudding! Oh, and if you order a beer, plan on having a driver.
(5)James H.
loved everything about this place. Ambience, service and the food. Brought me back to Deutschland. Thank you.

This was a really small place in a strip mall that you probably wouldn't notice unless someone told you about it. We read some good reviews on a travel site and tried it out. While it lacked atmosphere, the good food and service made up for it. Good portions and good value. They had a couple of good beer choices too.

We'd had our heart set on taking our relatives to Edelweiss while they were here on a short vacation, but when we arrived after a two hour drive, we discovered they were 'closed for renovations.' We scrambled to find a nearby alternative, and turned up Uwe's. It turned out to be tucked into a tiny shopping center that looked ever so slightly sketchy, but we embraced the adventure, and were glad we did. What a fantastic alternative! The food was excellent, and the staff friendly, helpful, and delightedly German, which gave B. a chance to practice. I got the pork schnitzel, along with everyone else, and stupidly forgot and ordered the salad. German salads are quite different, and tend to be more of a vegetable plate. This particular one came with a slice of boiled egg, two slices of beets, German potato salad, shredded carrot, sliced cucumber, and a little bit of lettuce to make it a salad. It was good, but certainly filling, and then the schnitzel came with even MORE vegetables! For dessert I got the apple strudel with ice cream, which turned out to be good, a little soggy, and not overwhelmingly sweet. We had no idea it existed, but now we have yet another reason to visit Colorado Springs!

I remember coming here with a group of coworkers about 20 years ago. From that distant memory, I don't think much has changed. The dining area is clean and basic. I like that they have not jammed tons of tables in so that diners have room to pull out their seat. I'm sure they could fit more tables in but I'm glad they have not. Although, my family is not German, I grew up eating and am used to eating very similar food made by eastern European relatives. The food at Uwe's is not exotic or "gourmet". It's essentially "stick to your ribs", very hearty food. Das ist gut. If you are not a teetotaler, get a Warsteiner. . . . .dark, with your meal. Real good. I ordered wiener schnitzel with a rich mushroom gravy, steamed veggies and fried potatoes on the side. The meat and gravy were so, so good. Uwe's serves two large pieces of breaded meat. But there is also an option for 1/2 order on most of their meals. To be honest, the veggies looked like they could have come from a bag of frozen but they were completely fine. I was not over the top about the fried potatoes either. Don't get me wrong, they were good. However, I can make even better fried potatoes at home. The two things that really stood out, for me, were the soup and salad. One of my companions ordered the cream of tomato and the other ordered the Hungarian goulash soup. Both were delicious but the tomato stood out over the goulash. I ordered a salad as a starter and it did not disappoint. The salad contained waxed beans, shredded carrot, cucumbers, tender potatoes and tomatoes in a very basic white vinegar/sugar dressing. I'm guessing those where the components of the dressing. I could have made a meal out of just the salad and soup. Those were just delicious. . . .simple and delicious.
(4)Lindsey A.
I grew up in a German household and this is the ONLY restaurant in Colorado Springs where the food tastes like home. A thousand times better than Edelweiss, although very small and quaint, Uwe's is - hands down - the place to be for authentic German food and beer.

Uwe's: Great, Filling German Food, Reasonable Prices ... NUFF SAID! Category: German 31 Iowa Ave Colorado Springs, CO 80909 (719) 475-1611 Price Range: $$ I have been eating at Uwe's since the late 1980's and nothing has changed, not a single thing except the prices and they are still very fair! Large portions, rich sauces, tender schnitzel, succulent bratwürst, homemade späetzel, fresh bread, delicious salads, frothy beer, and zesty goulash, everything you would expect from a German restaurant, all set the tone for authentic German dining right here in Colorado Springs. My favorite is the wiener (veal) schnitzel cordon bleu, two breaded veal cutlets stuffed with ham and cheese then baked to gooey perfection, served with a side of Hunter's (mushroom) sauce, crispy home fries, and veggie of the day. Meals are preceded by fresh pumpernickel bread and an assortment of German potato salad, crisp greens, tomatoes, and cucumbers topped with a light vinaigrette dressing or soup. The roulade is a traditional Bavarian stuffed cabbage with ground meat, rice, and spices enveloped with fresh cabbage leaves and topped with a light tomato sauce, accompanied by German potato dumplings (späetzel) and red cabbage. For those with a zest for the spicy, the Hungarian Paprika Schnitzel ($14.25) is a good choice and the Jäegerschnitzel ($14.25), breaded pork cutlets covered with a thick mushroom sauce is always a hearty, filling, rib-sticking meal. Uwe's has a nice selection of beer, domestic and import, with the Wärsteiner Dünkel, a dark, frothy, delight being my go-to beer for German meals. Desserts are traditional and inexpensive with apple strüdel ($3.50) and ice cream ($.50) taking center stage for those with voracious appetites and room leftover for a little sweetness. The service is always good and, as you would expect in a German establishment, efficient with little small talk while remaining friendly and helpful. CombatCritic Gives Uwe's German Restaurant 9 Bombs Out of 10 ... BOMBS ARE GOOD!

Before I begin, and if you're interested, call for serving hours. They close their kitchen between lunch and dinner. I am no expert on Germany, however I did live in the Frankfurt area for two years. Stepping into this restaurant I was immediately transported back to that European locale. It is decorated and arranged in only a way that I can recall from my days overseas. I ordered the jagerschnitzel. It was roughly $8 and had two very nice sized cuts of pork and a good sized portion of mixed vegetables and lightly fried potatoes. The mushroom gravy was done just right, in comparison to some I've had which were heavy and thick in consistency. Overall, it was outstanding and I intend to return for a lunch at least monthly. I recommend it highly for anyone who enjoys authentic German cuisine. I will forewarn, however, that the lunch menu, though with a daily special, is somewhat scant in comparison to the dinner menu. I did not ask if I could order from the dinner menu while I was at lunch.
(5)Kyle M.
It was just ok. I love German food and have spent some time in Germany and this place didn't cut it for my German food fix.The jager sauce on the jagersnitzel was a little watered down and the goulash didn't do it for me. I would not go here again and would suggest anyone else try other German restaurants in town.
